A section of political leaders from the Luhya community allied to the Azimio la Umoja coalition have issued a set of demands for them to support ODM leader Raila Odinga’s presidential bid in the August General Election.
Addressing the media on Wednesday, the leaders from the Mulembe nation led by ODM Secretary General Edwin Sifuna demanded that the ticket for the Nairobi Governorship race be handed to Westlands Member of Parliament Tim Wanyonyi who hails from the community.
“Tim Wanyonyi is the only candidate wa ODM. Our share as the Luhya community is Governor Tim Wanyonyi. Rais imeenda, deputy itaenda, hata wakitaka kuchukua hizo zingine wachukue, lakini ya Governor wasiguze,” said Makadara MP George Aladwa.
“The Governor position is our irreducible minimum,” added former Former Nairobi town clerk Philip Kisia.
Kisia added that the Senate position, which Sifuna is seeking, also be reserved for the Luhya community.
The leaders also want 24 MCA positions and five parliamentary seats in Nairobi.
Former Nairobi County Assembly Speaker Beatrice Elachi weighed in on the issue saying: “Lazima tuwe na heshima. Tim alianza hii safari mapema na anaheshimu Baba. Apewe ticket ya ODM kwanza kabla tuseme chochote.”
Insisting that they have the political numbers needed in the election, the leaders further want to be guaranteed three key Cabinet positions in the Azimio government; the Finance, Health and Roads Ministries should ODM leader Raila Odinga become President.
