James Orengo Picks William Oduol As Running Mate In Siaya Governor Race

Siaya Senator James Orengo, who is vying for the county’s governor seat, has now picked William Oduol as his running mate in the race.

Orengo, who was given a direct Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) ticket in the contest, announced the decision in a letter to the party’s National Elections Board (NEB) dated May 10, 2022.

“I have nominated Mr William Odhiambo Oduol as my running mate for the seat of the deputy governor in the General Election to be held on August 9 following my nomination by the ODM party to contest for the seat of governor, Siaya County,” read the letter.

Oduol was initially set to contest for the Alego Usonga parliamentary seat, presently held by ODM’s Sam Atandi, but later dropped his bid.

He sought the Siaya governor’s seat in 2013, beating out EALA Member of Parliament Dr. Oburu Oginga in the ODM nominations, before the ticket was later handed to incumbent county boss Cornel Rasanga.

His roping into Senator Orengo’s team has largely been viewed by political pundits as a ploy to bring in the vote-rich Alego Usonga area, where Governor Rasanga also hails from.

The Orengo-Oduol ticket is now set to face off with the tag team of former Rarieda MP Nicholas Gumbo and his running mate Charles Owino, who is the former police spokesperson.

Gumbo and Owino are vying on the Mandera Governor Ali Roba-led United Democratic Movement (UDM) party, where they decamped from ODM.
