Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has been handed a direct nomination ticket by the Wiper Democratic Movement to vie for the Mombasa County governorship in the August General Election.

Sonko was handed the ticket by Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka in a ceremony in Nairobi on Thursday.

This comes almost two weeks after the Musyoka-led party submitted Sonko’s name to the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) as one of those who had been cleared to run in the party’s primaries.Sonko was expected to face off with Kisauni MP Ali Mbogo for the nomination ticket but in a turn of events, Mbogo has now been named the former Nairobi governor’s running mate following consensus talks.

Mike Sonko will now battle it out against Mombasa Senator Hassan Omar (UDA) and Mvita MP Abdulswamad Sharif  Nassir (ODM), who are both eyeing the county’s governorship seat.
